Microbiology
Meaning
Microbiology is the study of micro organisms, that is unicellular or cell-cluster microscopic organisms. These microorganisms include fungi, protista, bacteria and viruses. It is a rather broad term that includes some sub disciplines that can be studied as standalone subjects like bacteriology, virology, mycology, and phraseology. Then there are subjects like Pathogenic Microbiology, Microbial Genetics, Immunology, Veterinary Microbiology, Medicinal Microbiology, Microbial Physiology, Environmental Microbiology, and Industrial Microbiology and so on and all these need much research. Though these microbes are usually associated with the negative aspects many of them are responsible for benefits in food industry, waste management etc.
Qualifications required
Since it is a career mostly dependent on research and quality control, Masters or Doctorate in the field is a must. The area of specialization can be any of the different types of microbes or related developmental fields.
Scope
Microbiology we know is not a single subject. It has many areas of specializations. It has been over 300 years that these microbes were discovered for the first time still the area needs much research. The range of job opportunities for microbiologists is as diverse as the organisms they work with. Universities have eternally been in search of good microbiologists. With Industrial advancements, environmental awareness and growth in food industry, the scope of microbiologists is increasing and so are the types of jobs associated with this growing field.
