Meaning
Materials engineering and sciences deal with all aspects of materials( that includes metals, ceramics, polymers (plastics), semiconductors, and combinations of materials called composites) right from their extraction from natural and recycled resources, selection for a given purpose, characteristics study, development of new materials and developing specific properties (lighter, stronger, durable, flexible or with any other properties better than the current ones) to processes and performance analysis of materials. In short, it is involved with all the processes that turn material resources into useful products that impact all facets of our economy, such as aerospace, electronics, transportation, communication, construction, recreation, entertainment, and environment
Qualifications required
Degree in Materials Science/ Engineering Research in material development. Materials science and engineering is an interdisciplinary field that addresses the scientific fundamentals of materials, their processing, and their engineering design for technological applications. Basic principles of chemistry and physics are applied in process Materials Science and Engineering graduates go on to graduate school and more intensive study in materials.
Scope
Materials engineers and scientists (whether generalists or specialists in a particular class of material) are employed by industry and government for jobs for research, development, production, and management. They are employed in the manufacturing and service industries starting their careers as Metallurgist / Metallurgical Engineer, Materials Engineer/Scientist, Polymer Engineer, Ceramic Engineer leading to Manufacturing Engineer, Quality Assurance Engineer, Process Engineer, Biomaterials Scientist and the list goes on, and they grow likewise.
