Forensic research
Meaning
Associated with the legal system, forensic research applies a spectrum of sciences and technologies to help investigate a crime situation. It usually requires a team of forensic experts to deal with a situation. The team may include experts in either or all of the streams like criminalistics, ballistics, anthropology, archeology, biology, entomology, toxicology and so on.
Qualifications required
BSc (or coursework equivalent) in science such as chemistry, biology or physics. Coursework should be heavy on chemistry and ideally include microscopy and statistics. Courses in Psychology, medicine, anthropology, geology, odontology, pathology or toxicology are an added advantage. It is preferred that one goes in for a PG in forensics after pursuing one or more of these courses at the graduate level.
Scope
Since the stream is directly related t the legal system, most of the experts are absorbed in government departments and forensic laboratories. Choice of careers can be that of medical examiner, crime laboratory analyst, crime scene examiner, forensic engineer. One can even go in for psychological profiling, anthropology and toxicology.
